Treating those Dreaded Fleas - 4 tips to a flea free home!

Fleas are one of the most annoying and common parasites to affect your beloved pets and can cause a range of conditions such as excessive itching, hair loss and a form of dermatitis caused by the flea saliva - all not very nice at all!

The problem here is that they not only affect your pets, but can also have a devestating effect on humans as well causing red sore welts, sores and so on (and don't forget your other pets as well - the cat, guinnea pigs and even your birds.)

But what Flea Treatment For Dogs do we get?

Thankfully though, they are the most easiest to control if you know how.

Lets look firstly at the sources of fleas - where do we get them from?

Well, there are any number of places with the most common being neighbours, dog kennels, the vet clinic (yes even here!). They can even be carried home unwittingly by humans through interactions with animals outside of the family home such as out walking the dog with friends, recreating at the dog beach, and even that 5 minute visit to the pet store.

Now that we know the sources, lets look at how we control them.

1. Hygiene - keep the house clean and tidy. you don't want to give these critters any reason to find your place an attractive place to stay. Vacuum regularly, and periodically treat carpeted areas with flea powder.

2. Dog Bedding - same rule applies. Keep clean and occasionally treat with flea powder.

3. Dog Care - regularly brush and wash your dog. brushing your dog helps to remove dead skin and any eggs that may have been laid. Washing helps complete the process and wash out any eggs or live fleas missed by brushing.

4. Apply a Flea Treatment For Dogs. This is where it gets confusing because of the myriad of treatments available. All I can offer is speak to friends and other trusted sources of advice. Check what works for them and what ones to avoid.

As indicated, the range is extensive and includes collars, drops and oral treatments. Most have a residual effect (particularly the topical and oral treatments) and can last 30-60 days.

Always apply in accordance with the packaging instructions and if there are any advers reactions, please cease treatment and seek further advice from your local vet.

By following these simple tips, the scurge of fleas no longer need to be a problem to you and your family, especially your beloved dog.

The saddest Shih tzu

It is very sad to see shih tzu Grooming being left for far too long, especially when they are probably one of the most easiest and most placid breeds to groom. Luckily though, its not as hard as it may seem to get the poor little dog back on track again and looking neat and healthy.

Here are some easy tips to remember:

regularly brush your dog. In the case of this dog, the hair was so matted that the best course of action was to use the clippers to reduct it to a manageable length, wash and condition and then brush out the remaining length
ensure the coat is kept to a manageable length by brushing and trimming /clipping
use appropriate shampoo and conditioner to help prevent tangling and matting

Following these three basic and often overlooked tips can help keep your dog looking its best.

A Safe Guide To trimming Your Dog

Unfortunately, not many people these days, see that proper grooming of their dog takes practice and is an art. Unkept hair is often the main area of trimming to avoid the dog bringing dirt into the house. They mostly ignore other areas. Removing undesirable hair growth can sometimes hurt the dog.

Grooming the dogs coat needs to suit the breed. Longer hair breeds can suffer if you clip them wrongly. Dust accumulates in the coat, and skin diseases may result. Coats that haven't been cared for correctly can be a haven for parasites and other sinsects.

Long toenails can accidentially break and hurt the dog when walking and so needs to be regularly maintained. Longer nails will tend to twist sideways, and in serious cases even dig into the foot and cause injury. Breaking claws is common in dogs when they have been allowed to grow too long.

Bleeding of the paw is common if the tonail is trimmed too far. Since the quick of the nail is the source of blood and the location of nerves, it's what keeps the nail healthy and growing. This area is located well back in the nail, but if the nail's been cut too short or splinters, the quick may be exposed. If the quick is exposed or damaged, this can be quite painful for the dog.

You must always use the correct tools when trimming your dogs nails. Nail clippers purchased from a reputable pet store must be used for dogs. There are a number of great new nail clippers out there that are made to keep pain and damage to a minimum.

Clipping your dog in winter should be avoided. Long Coats are needed, particularly in snow conditions to provide a layer of insulation for the dog. Frostbite can affect your dog as well.

In summer, your dog's hair shouldn't be cut to short either. The dogs coat also acts as a sun screen to the suns harmful rays. The coat helps to maintain the dogs temperature in warm and cold conditions. Protecting the dog in these conditions important, and so minor grooming is encouraged.

Unhealth dogs, need the protection of their coat and so any grooming should be minimised. This can cause them stress, so clip sick pets only when absolutely necessary.

Taking your dog for regular walks is a good way of keeping their nails short naturally. Wearing the nails down gradually will be the result. It naturally controls the length of the nails, keeping you and your pet from needing to deal with nail clippers.

Grooming to the dogs breed can often be a challenge, and so we always recommend to seek advice from a qualified groomer.

Aussie the Poodle - our latest happy customer!

Here is our latest video of Aussie the Poodle. I'll show you a before and after....have a look at the end, Aussie is bounding around the place like a little pony!

You will see the style of his fur at the beginning of the clip. It has grown quite long and is a little unkempt. The way I groomed Aussie was with a no. 5 blade after a good wash to get the sand and other dirt out of his coat (....also helps preserve the blades). Once washed and clipped, you'll see a completely different dog. He's nicely groomed and his coat is just like plush carpet. To keep his coat like this, we'll be seeing Aussie every 6-8 weeks.

Diagnosing a Dog Skin Bump

I often come across skin lumps and bumps in the dogs I groom and depending on the lump found, is worthy of a check at the local vet.

Usually, lumps develop due to abnormal cell division - leading to internal tumours, cysts or nodules which can be the result of reactions to various medications such as steroids and vaccines. Even bacterial infections can be the cause.

In other instances, lumps may also be the result of swelling of the lymph nodes.

In order for the vet to properly assess the lump, a number of diagnosis alternatives may be considered including skin scrapings or even biopsies where a portion of the lump is removed and sent away to a labarotary for further analysis

Depending on the results from the lab, treatment options may range from topical creams, to antibiotics to the other end of the scale - surgical removal and/or radiation therapy.

And finally, if in doubt, get the vet to check it out.

Antihistamines for Canine Itching

We have experienced this in our own dogs and know the benefit of using antihistamines for their treatment. It is essentially no different to allergies in humans, and for the dog, can be just as debilitating.
If this itching is left untreated, they can cause sores and infections. If you are unsure of the source of the itching, it is alwasy best to confirm with your local vet as the source will then determine the treatment method required such as antibiotics, topical creams, flea treatments or the use of nutritional supplements to encourage hydrated skin etc.

Because of the tightness of the fur, a No. 7 blade is used to take the coat shorter and to give a more even coat all over. This client is absolutely lovely and easy to groom. You will see that she is quite content having and will happily sit still. Its important to remember that the grooming experience can be quite traumatic to some dogs, however the more they are groomed, the more at ease they will be over time.

Seizures in Dogs

Seizures in dogs can be an extremely frightening experience, not only for the dog but for the owners as well. Its very important in these situations to try and remain calm and reassuring for the dog, and to move objects away from the dog that may cause them further injury. Prompt vet assistance is always required after a seizure to potentially place the animal under care and to monitor the dogs condition. The most usual suspect of a seizure is a neuroligical defect, however other nutrient/vitamin, dehydration imblances including poisoning may also be the cause. Tips for grooming your dog and keeping a healthy coat

Grooming isn't something we usually give a lot of thought to when choosing dogs, but we should. We often forget he allergies caused by dog hair , and in order to keep the dog happy and healthy, more care is often required. Dogs with a 'double coat are extremely difficult to groom. Some dogs like the Australian Shepherd Dog, sheds its coat twice/year and will loose large amounts of hair.

To keep the Aussie fur down to a manageable level, you will need to regularly brush your dog. However, they shed their fuzzy undercoat almost year-round, leaving giant dust bunnies in their wake. The Labrador is another dog that sheds large amounts of hair. Despite their low-maintenance reputation, Labs shed throughout the year. Wear a pair of black pants when you pet your next yellow Lab, and you'll experience the bane of Lab owners everywhere: short, spiky hairs stuck to you in copious amounts. Even if you adopted a regular brushing regime, you will always find hair everywhere.

The setters shed the least. The reason for this is they have a single coat and whilst their hair is quite long, it is almost like our own hair and easier to manage. This breed has very low shedding however they still need to regularly brushed to avoid tangles. People generally cope differently with differing dog coats and what may be suitable for one persons lifestyle, may not be suitable to others. For example, poodles don't shed much, so allergy sufferers find that they have fewer symptoms when they keep poodles.

On the other hand, poodles require regular brushing and clipping. If their grooming becomes less frequent, their coat will become matted and tangled very easily. For those without the time or money to maintain a high-maintenance coat, a poodle is the wrong dog. Breeds such as the Australian shepherd or the Belgian Malinois do best with daily brushing as a way to keep shed hair to a minimum.

Regular washing (or over washing) will tend to remove the natural oils in the dogs skin which is needed to help regulate their temperature and keep their skin healthy. Too much bathing can wash away these oils and lead to dandruff and other skin conditions. For Allergy sufferers, weekly washing may also help reduce symptoms for the owners. Grooming is not limited to washing, brushing and clipping, but also extends to ear cleaning, nail clipping, gland management and teeth cleaning.

Ear infections are typical with various dog breeds such as Labradors and golden retrievers because of their ‘drop ear' and so regular cleaning is required as part of this grooming regime. NEVER use utensils or cotton swaps as they may become lodged in the ear canal. Instead, use a warm damp cloth. Nail clipping is also an important consideration, especially for 'house dogs' because they aren't wearing nails down on abrasive surfaces. And ideally, you should brush your dog's teeth daily or at least weekly.
